Caprio, who served more than four decades on the bench, gained worldwide recognition through televised segments and viral social media clips of his rulings, where he blended justice with empathy. He became widely known as the “nicest judge in the world,” earning admiration from millions for his emotional and humane approach to the law.
Born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1936, Caprio studied political science at Providence College in the 1950s and later earned his law degree from Suffolk University Law School.
He began practicing law in 1962 and became active in local politics. In 1985 he was appointed Chief Judge of the Providence Municipal Court and by 2015 had attained worldwide fame as clips from his show Caught in Providence, showcasing his unique blend of justice and compassion, went viral.
