Editorial | Assad celebrates another sham ‘Independence Day’

On this 77th anniversary of “Independence Day,” Syrians are still waiting for their country to be free again as the independence that was originally achieved with the French evacuation in 1946 was forfeited by Bashar Assad when he invited foreign occupiers into Syria to kill the Syrian people so that he could remain in power.

Another year has passed but Syria’s freedom seekers are still determined to persevere in their struggle to free Syria from the clutches of a brutal self-serving dictator even as his regime celebrates another meaningless Syrian Independence Day.

In reality, those still living in regime-controlled areas of the country who are encouraged to celebrate this sham “holiday” have no knowledge of the true meaning of independence, freedom of expression, or basic human rights as long as they continue to live under the rampant corruption and oppression of the Assads.

And we can’t help but ask what kind of “independence” can be found in Syria when the country is now overrun by those foreign occupiers brought in by a dictator for the sole purpose of maintaining his stranglehold on the country even if it meant driving half the population out of their own homes and killing as many Syrians as it would take to not only crush their revolution for freedom and dignity but their spirits as well.

there will be no more independence for Syrians until the Assad regime finally falls and the last of the Russian, Iranian and Hezbollah soldiers depart from Syrian soil

Sadly, Syrian Independence Day has lost any importance or significance it once had after decades of brutality, corruption, and tyranny and there must be freedom from the Assad family and all who support their brutal reign of oppression before the country can truly celebrate Syrian Independence Day again.

So even as Assad pats himself on the back and observes his national holidays, we know those celebrations are meaningless as the country has multiple occupiers and that there will be no more independence for Syrians until the Assad regime finally falls and the last of the Russian, Iranian and Hezbollah soldiers depart from Syrian soil.
