As the year 2023 draws to a close, the economic woes in Syria persist, casting a shadow of uncertainty over the new year. Despite public posturing by the head of the Syrian regime Bashar Assad and company that all is well, the relentless deterioration of the country’s economy has continued unabated leaving the vast majority of Syrian citizens grappling with the harsh realities of life below the poverty line.

The challenges faced throughout this year are nothing new as they continue to mirror those of previous years, but the picture it paints for Syrians of the prospects for any positive changes becomes grimmer with each passing year.

Unlike the festive atmosphere of bygone days that still envelops much of the world during the Christmas season, the spirit of celebration inside Syria has become but one more victim of the regime’s callous brutality

With just a few days left in 2023, the prevailing sentiment among those Syrians still living in their homeland is one of desperation, as thoughts of migration and seeking refuge elsewhere consume their collective consciousness. Unlike the festive atmosphere of bygone days that still envelops much of the world during the Christmas season, the spirit of celebration inside Syria has become but one more victim of the regime’s callous brutality and indifference to the suffering of its people.

In addition, Syria’s plight has regrettably faded from the global media’s spotlight as other issues have taken precedence on the international stage.

even this glimmer of hope for a fresh start in 2024 is overshadowed by the harsh reality

As they stand on the brink of another new year, the primary concern for many Syrians is not the anticipation of positive indicators for a brighter future within their homeland. Instead, the overwhelming desire of many is to escape the economic turmoil and seek solace elsewhere. But even this glimmer of hope for a fresh start in 2024 is overshadowed by the harsh reality that while leaving the country seems to be the only viable option for a better life on the one hand, it is next to impossible to achieve for most on the other.

the aspiration for a better life, far from the economic hardships that have become a daily struggle for the majority of Syrians, remains but a poignant theme

In stark contrast to the global optimism associated with a fresh start at the beginning of a new year, the people of Syria find themselves yearning for even the possibility of a change that would extend beyond the limitations of Syria’s borders, as well as the calendar year. Sadly, the aspiration for a better life, far from the economic hardships that have become a daily struggle for the majority of Syrians, remains but a poignant theme as the rest of the world ushers in the promise of 2024.
